Lower Don River - Past, Present and Future

Outing Type →

This will be a journey through time, as we assess the current state of the Don River, look at signs of its past, and get a sense of what the future holds. Sponsored by the WCA Conservation Committee, this outing will put-in at Corktown Commons and proceed north up the river to the area of the Prince Edward Viaduct (a distance of just under 3km). Shallows and minor current towards the north end of the route will influence how far up-river we proceed. We will then return to Corktown, and take a look south towards Keating Channel to see what's going on with the Portlands renaturalization and flood protection project.

Trent-Severn Canal: Buckhorn to Lakefield

Outing Type →

An easy paddle of a section of the Trent-Severn Canal, to give people a taste of this 'clamping' paddle-holiday adventure. If you haven't done any serious tripping/back country camping this is a wonderful opportunity to have a taste of it with some people who have quite a bit of experience. The camping on this trip is easy and comfortable ... and A LOT CHEAPER THAN GOING TO A PROVINCIAL PARK!????

Itinerary description

I was planning a few days solo paddling on the canal and a friend suggested I open it as an opportunity for others to get a taste.
Presently I am planning to make it three days. I will begin Friday (Sept 9) from Bobcaygeon to Buckhorn (28km) and camp there. Saturday (Sept 10) I will paddle from Buckhorn to Lovesick Lake Lock (10 km) and camp there. Sunday (Sept 11) I will paddle from Lovesick Lake Lock to Lakefield (22 km).
Anyone wishing to join can either start with me at Bobcaygeon for the friday paddle, or just meet me at Buckhorn on the friday night and only paddle the saturday and sunday part of my trip.

Required Items to Bring

All your own normal tripping gear: tent, sleeping bag and pad, rain gear!!!!, canoes, paddles, PFDs, sunscreen, sunhat!!, etc.

Recommended Items to Bring

Camera, some cash, a sunny disposition.

How to Get There
Event Directions

Meet either at the Bobcaygeon lock or the Buckhorn lock according to when you want to join me.

Carpool Info

We will work this out once I know who is coming. I live in Lakefield ... just a 5 minute walk from the takeout so we will coordinate the carpool according to how many people come.

Other
Notes

The reason I'm offering this event is to give people a taste of paddling one of the wonderful Ontario Canals. During Covid I paddled the entire Trent-Severn Canal, and also the Rideau Canal. It is very scenic and actually a bit like 'clamping'. We pay 5$/night/person for the right to camp at the locks, and that gives a nice flat and comfortable mown lawn to set up tents on ... and a bathroom to use! (they give us a key or tell us where the key is hid!)
Once I know who is coming we can decide if we want to share cooking or just go 'solo' and cook for ourselves.

Quetico -- Last of the Summer

Outing Type →

Twelve days in the Park, catching the last of the summer. Water levels are relatively high, and the bugs are gone. There are fish. The portage crews have been through. The park had about 14 % burn last year, but there are currently no fires in the park. The plan is to seek the virgin forest in the park. From Baptism Creek to Baptism Lake to Cache, a rather long portage; if water levels are high, Cache River; if not, another long portage to McKenzie. Then over to Shan Walshe and back up through Kahshahpiwi/Chatterton and out through French.

Fishing gear is a plus.

How to Get There
Event Directions

French Lake is on Highway 11, about 14 hours from Toronto. Thunder Bay airport is possible, shuttle is possible for one or two with my car, or can be arranged with local outfitters It's an hour and half from the Park. There is a campground on French Lake, where a night can be booked before the trip. Cars are left there.

Possible from Toronto for one or two. Gas is about 700 return, split however many ways.

Other
Notes

I've done Quetico many times, often over the labour day weekend, although I never made it down to Shan Walshe. Like to leave early and paddle/portage til mid afternoon; winds pick up in the late morning. The trip will avoid white water. I plan on renting a satellite phone for the journey, just in case.Try as I might, portages are a two-carry.

Minesing Wetlands GeoPaddle IS FULL

Outing Type →

Geo Paddling the Minesing Wetlands from Willow Creek Canoe Launch to Edenvale Conservation Area

Canoeing/ kayaking combined with geocaching during the trip.
I love paddling this area in the Spring time especially with the flooded forest portion.

Geocaching is/was my lifesaver throughout this Covid season and it give me positive feedback and mental satisfaction. I have explored up to 40 new rivers/ and lakes with geocaching and mostly solo paddling

Geocaching is game like treasure hunting, finding tupperware in the wilderness using satelittes.

it can be downloaded on your phone as an app, you can also check the https://geocaching.com website. It is for free, but for $35 a year you have more access to more options.

Water levels and scenery varies a lot from year to year. Having a GPS helps a lot. Plus now combining this with geocaching it will be way more interesting

GeoPaddling the Mississppi River, Pakenham, ON - postponed

Outing Type →

This is a GeoPaddle event. Paddling for 1-3 days on different parts of the Mississippi River in Ontario.
SW of Ottawa, N of Perth

The focus of this GeoPaddle is geocaching. If that is not your thing to try, then please DON'T sign up.
this means we get stop every 200-300m  to look for a geocache, depending on description, and / or hint. It could be easily reachable from the kayak or canoe, and sometimes we have to get out and get it from shore.

The geocache is either higher in a tree, or further in land. Mostly because the water level's vary from time to time.

The Mississippi river consist of different areas  that I want to explore paddle. combining it with finding geocaching.

It is a river, mostly flatwater with some current., depending on flow, wind. But we will be paddling close to the shore as we will be looking for geocaches close to shore or on shore.

Geocaching is a game I play, that helped me through this whole Covid Isolation time. I have explored and paddled 40 new rivers/ lakes combined with geocaching in the last 2 years.
Geocaching is a game where we find tupperware in the wilderness while using satelittes.

The Mississippi river, has about 80 caches on it on different parts of the river.

I can pass the list of the geocaches to  you when you committed, to join me on this trip.

You can find the Geocaching App on your phone, and/or also can check Geocaching out on the website

https://www.geocaching.com. The game is for free and you have the option to check out more possiblities for $35  a year.

York River - Hwy 28 to Paddler's Coop

Outing Type →

A few of us have decided to paddle the York River from Egan Chutes (HWY 28) to Paddlers Coop on the Madawaska River. This is a two day trip which is mostly flatwater. But there are a few rapids ... all of which can be portaged, and the leaders are not pushing the idea of whitewater. So ... we will call this a novice/intermediate trip.
Plans at present are to paddle the 27 km from Egan Chutes to my cottage at the big bend on the river. We will camp on the lawn, or retreat into the cottage if the weather is terrible. I should have it 'opened' up by then. The next day we will carry on past the Boulter Road bridge, through Conroy Marsh, on to the Madawaska River. At this point we will swing east down the river to Paddlers Co-op. The trip begins with 3 portages through the 'chutes' near the put-in (one hour to pass these - none are more than 30m?).

You should bring a tent(s) and a sleeping pad, bug dope (early May ... could have a few black flies, and your own canoe, paddles and PFD's.
Right now we are one tandem and solo canoe. We could accept 2 or 3 more tandems.
Details such as shuttle, food, etc. will be worked out once we know our participants. I will keep anyone interested apprised of the details as they flesh out.

This event has been CANCELLED due to COVID-19  Ontario government guidelines of 5 or less people gatherings at the current time.   We will re-schedule it for later on in the summer if government guidelines are relaxed.

Rouge National Urban Park and Lake Ontario shoreline explored by canoe.  It always surprises people what a beautiful little river we have so close to Toronto.

If the winds/waves are favourable we will explore some of the Lake Ontario shoreline.    If not we will travel up the Rouge River for about an hour and then return.

This event has been changed from a down river event  with car shuttle to a flatwater event to address the COVID-19 pandemic concerns.

We will practice social distance per canoe.  The parking lot,  put in / take out and lunch spot can accomidate social distancing.

We can not team people up for this event per government guidelines.   So you either previously agree amounst yourselves to paddle together as a tandem canoe team or you are paddling solo.

Only sign up  for this event if you feel the benefits of getting out canoeing and getting some fresh air far out way the risk.    At the end of the day it is your decision.

Come Out to See the Fall Colours

Outing Type →

Cambridge (Galt) to Paris, Ontario. Generally a low water, flatwater trip with lots of swifts ... and a few easy class one rapids at this time of year. I ran this stretch a few weeks ago. It is a novice level paddle and I really don't expect any dunks, but come with a complete change of clothing in case you need it!
We will paddle from Cambridge/Galt to Paris. I can do this in 4 hours normally, but we will stop for lunch on the riverside along the way. If we meet at 9:30 to shuttle cars, and get on the river by about 10 am, we should have no trouble being finished by 4 pm.

My goal on this trip is get one more trip in ... before the weather really goes cold and wet as it usually does around Halloween.

Please try to arrange most of your canoes, PFD's, etc. gear and transportation yourself.

Canoe down the Grand River to Paris. Normally this can be done in under 4 hours. We will bring a lunch to eat along the way. Either at Glen Morris, or there is a good island stop about 40 minutes after Glen Morris.

Warm clothes. Rain Gear (bring good quality, not a simple windbreaker). Rubber boots would be advisable. Warm gloves and a good warm hat. A lunch. Some water.

Generally it is easier for logistics if people sign up for this with paddle buddy details already worked out.

Presently I will be paddling alone ... so I have room for one passenger in my canoe, and I can supply a paddle and PFD. First contact, First served.
If you wish to offer the same to someone else, let me know, and within reason I will try to match people up.

This IS a middle fall date! Dress warm. Bring an extra set of clothes in a water proof bag! I paddled this route a few weeks ago and the water levels were low. I definitely do NOT advise you attempt to paddle this river in

McCrae Lake Cleanup day Saturday September 7 2019

Outing Type →

It might be a surprise to you to know that the campsites in the McCrae lake Conservation Reserve are cleaned by volunteers. Without that semi annual cleanup effort, Ontario MECP would be forced to consider closing the park to camping.

The semi annual (spring and fall) cleanup of McCrae Lake campsites is on for Saturday September 7 , 2019. The cleanup the Barrie Canoe and Kayak Club is the chief organizer. As a WCA member I am posting this on the WCA’s Outings page, and I will put you in touch with the Barrie Club club member who is organizing the entire day. You do not need to be a BCKC member to join us on that day, however we will need you to sign a couple of waiver forms. BCKC will also be issuing invites for this day to members of the Five Winds Backcountry Ski Club of Toronto as well as the , The Wilderness Canoe Association and we will post an invite on Facebook under Ontario Hiking.

The cleanup day starts at the McCrae Lake parking lot at 9am.

Cleanup group members, who are not members of the Barrie Canoe and Kayak Club are welcome, and you may bring your own canoe. If you don't have a canoe, PFD, or paddle, please see this link:

https://bckc.ca/trip-sheets/summer-trip ... MClark.pdf

and contact the cleanup organizer for BCKC, , Marilyn Clark so that we can pair you with a BCKC member and put you in a canoe. If you want to bring a friend and you want to work with that friend for the day, we can do that. We usually pair two canoes together to clean a group of sites. For insurance reasons the BCKC requires that at least one BCKC member be in a BCKC owned canoe. We can't pair two non BCKC members alone in one of our canoes.

For information to contact the organizers of the Sept 7 . 2019 cleanup day, click here:

https://bckc.ca/trip-sheets/summer-trip ... MClark.pdf

or send me an email off this page.

Group meetup time is 9am in the McCrae lake parking lot. feel free to drop us a line to get directions.

A park ranger staff member of the MECP (Ontario Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks ) will be with us for the day. Please know that without the semi annual support of BCKC to do this cleanup, the MNR does not have the money to cleanup up McCrae lake campsites because park users pay no fees, so no cleanup budget. Without the twice yearly cleanup, the MNR would be forced to consider closing McCrae Lake access for camping.

Please consider helping us keep it beautiful and accessible for all. thanks

(you are welcome. We do it because we love the place too.)

Itinerary description

We will be working with members of the Barrie Canoe and Kayak Club, as well as a Park Ranger from the Ontario Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) . BCKC.

We will be paddling around the shoreline of the lake (generally in pairs of canoes) , cleaning campsites and picking up garbage. At the end of a busy canoeing season , we always finds lots of BBQ grills and broken chairs. We collect all the garbage and bring it all back across the portage to
the parking lot. MECP and BCKC have an arrangement on this day for the Township of Georgian Bay to have a Township truck to collect the entire garbage pile the following Monday.

Bonus: Volunteers get to keep any items of value found. In past years that has included almost brand new, abandoned tents, tarps, chairs, ropes, camping knives.

We do always stop for a long hour long (or more ) lunch and swim. It sounds like work but it is light work and it is very satisfying to leave the place cleaner than it otherwise would be.

Required Items to Bring

Sunscreen, hat, lunch, fresh water to drink or a bottle and a filter so you can pump water, rain wear, a spare change of clothes in case you get .wet. Swimsuit and towel for a lunch time swim.
Canoe, PFD, and paddle (though we can provide those last three free of charge if you notify us in advance )
