University of Waterloo: Park Planning Study Needs Your Feedback

Dear WCA Member,

My name is Julia Coburn; I am a graduate student at the University of Waterloo with a focus on park management planning. To assist in our knowledge of park management plans in Ontario Provincial Parks, I am interested in understanding the perspectives of key park stakeholders, such as yourself. I hope that this information will help determine what visitor and tourism content stakeholders believe should be present in park management plans. I have sent an email earlier regarding this study and have decided to resend it for good measure. I am very interested to hear your valuable feedback on this topic.

I am requesting collaboration from you and your colleagues at Wilderness Canoe Association to complete our online survey (see below). For individuals with a particular interest in park management, we would also be interested in having the opportunity to interview them by phone, though this is optional.

(1) Filling out our online questionnaire. This questionnaire will ask you to rate the detail you believe various visitor and tourism policies should be stated in park management pans. It will take less than 10 minutes of your time by following the link below. Your feedback will be highly valuable.

(2) Participate in an interview (Optional). This phone interview will ask you more in depth questions about park management planning and park management plans. It will take less than 30 minutes time at your convenience. If you or one of your colleagues are interested in participating in an interview, please email Julia Coburn at jcoburn@uwaterloo.ca or call at (519) 501-6758

Participant Information:
This study wants the perceptions of five stakeholder groups: 1) Visitors, 2) Local Residents, 3) Tourism Operators, 4) Park Staff and 5) Non-Governmental Organization Staff and Members. We are going to concentrate on the management plans of three prominent and highly used Natural Environment Class Parks – Algonquin, Pinery, and Sandbanks Provincial Park. Deadline for feedback is April 28, 2011.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This study has been reviewed and received ethics clearance through the Office of Research Ethics, University of Waterloo. However, the final decision about participation belongs to individual participants.

If you have any questions regarding this study or would like additional information to assist you in reaching a decision about participation, please contact Julia Coburn at (519) 501-6758 or by email jcoburn@uwaterloo.ca.  You may also contact my supervisor, Professor Paul Eagles at (519) 888-4567 ext. 32716 or by email eagles@uwaterloo.ca.
I hope that the results of my study will be beneficial to the Wilderness Canoe Association, to the individual participants, as well as the broader park management community. I very much look forward to speaking with you and thank you in advance for your assistance with this project.

Thank you kindly for your time and consideration.

Yours Sincerely,

Julia Coburn

Petawawa Dam Project Survey

Dear WCA Member,

The following request comes from the Whitewater Ontario and it deserves your immediate attention.

URGENT REQUEST OF THE PADDLING COMMUNITY: YOUR INPUT IS NEEDED

Please solicit the input from your membership and fellow paddlers, but we ask that you do not circulate this survey beyond the trusted paddling community. Although Xeneca is aware that a survey of recreational users may be conducted, and the results will be made public, we want to prevent the results from being swayed by those outside of the paddling community. Do not post through social media, add this disclaimer if you send the link via e-mail and please ask others to use the same discretion.
For the sake of brevity, many details were left out of this survey. Please visit www.SaveThePetawawa.ca for information on the project, Whitewater Ontario's concerns and the possible impacts.
Although the option exists for anonymous entry, it is incompatible with some browsers. We apologize for the inconvenience but the issue is time sensitive and we wanted to move forward with the survey. If you wish, use a pseudonym / pseudo e-mail.

Comments will be accepted until Monday, April 25.

Thank you for your input.

Salmon River Access Denied - New Owner

Salmon River Access Threatened

Spring paddlers need to be aware that the traditional put-in to the Salmon River has a new owner who has denied access to paddlers.

The only public paddlers' access (via Gull Creek) to Sheffield Lake rather than the using the previous putin on the sideroad with the parking fee. It is in good shape, with adequate parking on both sides of the new bridge on CR#15.

many months of dedicated actions
(thanks, Aleks Gusev and hardworking

Rafting Hudson river 7-8 May

I've spent last ten March break vacations sking the Gore Mountain in North Creek, NY. Beautiful, hidden gem of a place, on the shores of Hudson river. Last May, I took delivery of the raft there, which we later paddled down George river. My friends and I took the opportunity to raft Hudson while we were there. It was a blast, so this May we're going for more. Much more!

If you're interested to join us, call me to talk about logistics and cost.
Here's a glimpse of what it looks like:

Winter Tent Rescue

Arduous Winter Trek -->

We rescued our winter tent from that last 18inch snowfall beginning of March, breaking trail 14K more than 24 inches deep, up the Barron River from the bridge (because AFA stopped plowing early), && that beautiful long long Canyon, then sections on thin ice to avoid getting tangled in alders impossibly up to our tits in snow, left at 7 a.m. arrived at 6 p.m.  u should have heard me when I keeled over, ripped the snowshoe bindings right off, pulled various feet muscles  ... got snow up to my armpits, lost 1 glove ... struggling to get out of a crazy angle worse than a beached walrus ... and Frank - 'out of hearing range' @#!!!!!

Frank is very sorry he was too far ahead to ASAP help, because I now need new $$snowshoes !!!  (just kidding, Sherpa Claws are aLwAyS repairable!@#)

Took the winter tent down next morning and trekked 14k back to our car.  As my sled was piled sooo high, it takes 2 people to stop it from falling over ... the person behind lends a hand at bad spots ... I damaged both groin muscles, and even my teeth hurt
now THATZ wilderness tripping !!!

Hilariously AFA had second thoughts and plowed later to Travers+ ... so we did get the tent out the easy way ...

Here's to whining about ugly tripping ... preferably sharing a bottle of Brandy ...  ahahahaaa !!%$!@#
